Knight (Eastern Promises, Dirty Pretty Things) to make feature directorial debut with the project
LONDON, April 11, 2011 - Shine Pictures has optioned the feature film rights to screenwriter Steve Knight's new screenplay Hummingbird as a vehicle for Knight to direct.
The project will mark Knight's feature directorial debut and will be co-produced by Shine, New Regency Productions and Paul Webster (Brighton Rock, Atonement, Pride & Prejudice) and Tracey Seaward, (The Queen, Dirty Pretty Things), reuniting Knight, Webster and Seaward after they previously collaborated on the Knight-penned, and Kudos Pictures-produced, Eastern Promises.
Casting is underway on Hummingbird, which is expected to start shooting in autumn 2011. The film, financed by New Regency, will be distributed worldwide by 20th Century Fox.
A damaged ex-special forces soldier, trapped in a criminal underworld, looks for revenge when an opportunity enables him to assume another man's identity. Hummingbird is a brutal, and yet surprisingly tender, thriller in which a man who believes himself beyond redemption seeks out his own version of justice and is awarded, if only fleetingly, with love.
Stephen Garrett, Chairman of Shine Pictures, said: "Steve Knight's Hummingbird is as classy a project as they come. His screenplay is clever and compelling, and there is no better way for Shine Pictures to celebrate its role as a champion of the best of British and European talent than for us to be hosting Steve's directorial debut."
Webster added: "This is a perfect project for me to continue my production relationship with Shine and New Regency on as I segue into launching my new venture and I thank Steve for this gift of a screenplay."
Knight said: "Hummingbird is a genuine passion project for me. I believe the story is timely, and the characters are drawn from a city full of broken lives and sudden opportunities. It is about redemption and love in a rarely seen urban underworld, and even the romance is forbidden. This is a story I have wanted to tell for many years and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to direct it."
The deal for Hummingbird was negotiated by Paula Jalfon (Senior VP, Production, Shine Pictures) and Eric Roth (Executive VP, Business Affairs, New Regency) with Brian Siberell (CAA) and Natasha Galloway (United Agents).
Knight is an award-winning British screenwriter whose credits include Wraths of the Titans, Dirty Pretty Things and Eastern Promises. His screenplay for Dirty Pretty Things earned him the Edgar Award for Best Motion Picture Screenplay and London Film Critics Circle award for British Screenwriter of the Year.
